Joppa High School is proud to announce that two of our very own young writers won cash prizes in Shawnee Community College's 2022 Young Writers High School Writing Contest. This contest is open to all area high school students in MO and IL. Students may enter many categories, which include Non-Fiction Essay, Short Fiction, and Poetry. Sophomore Emma Hottel took 1st Place in 9th & 10th Grade Short Fiction, earning her $100 for her entry entitled "Ayame." Junior Ava Stephens won 3rd place and $25 for her 11th & 12th Grade Poetry entry, "Good People." When receiving the news of the winners, Mr. May, JHS English teacher stated, "I am so proud of the many accomplishments of both of these students. From Beta Convention to Young Writers awards, I know that both Emma's and Ava's futures are bright. They both are talented young adults who have found their voice the last two years. We need more young people like these two to use that voice to inspire change in others." A copy of both winning entries are available in the JHS office.

The Senior Class, Ms. Owens, and I (Ms. Peck) enjoyed a trip to the Smoky Mountains this past week. We stayed in a beautiful lodge. We visited Dollywood, Dolly Parton’s Stampede, Gatlinburg, and Pigeon Forge. We were even lucky enough to see a momma bear and her three cubs. We all had such a good time! We would like to thank the Administration and the Board of Education for allowing us to go. We would also like to thank Charles Peck for agreeing to be our male chaperone. I think he had a good time too.

Pre-k students have enjoyed observing caterpillars and watching them grow and change. We learned about words like chrysalis and cocoon. We were excited to see them transform into butterflies and then we released them!!
